Leuzea carthamoides (lat.Rhaponticum Carthamoides) is a rare endemic plant, otnosyaschiesya to the family Asteraceae. It is a large perennial plant reaching a height of 130 cm Leuzea grows on the mountain slopes in limited areas of Eastern Siberia (Altai, Sayan). In the wild this plant is not found in any other region of the world. The collection of leuzea in Russia is limited and is under the control of the state. 

The history of leuzea as a medicinal plant started long ago, when local hunters watching the behavior of deer, known as stags, noticed that during the mating period when males fought each other for recuperation they were looking for and dug lewsey and ate its root. Hence the popular name of Maral root.

 The leuzea root extract contains tannins, flavonoids, glycosides, lignins, alkaloids, vitamins, organic acids, and others not yet certain compounds. Today it is the only officinal plant, has a pronounced anabolic effect.

This effect provides the following biologically active compounds (BASS), as ecdysteroids substances able to stimulate protein synthesis without causing hormonal effects of synthetic anabolics.
